In one of the first big stories from the documentary series “Mr. McMahon,” which just appeared on Netflix, Vince McMahon addressed the allegations made by former WWE referee Rita Chatterton.

Chatterton first accused McMahon in the early 1990s of assaulting her years earlier. McMahon claimed he forced her to perform sexual acts on him in his limousine in 1986. However, because Chatterton’s accusation was made after the statute of limitations had expired, no charges were ever filed against McMahon.

Regarding the allegations, McMahon said:

When you’re accused of this and that and there’s a barrage of things: “You’re this, you’re that.” One of the things was an alleged rape that never happened. If you’re accused of rape, you’re a rapist. It was consensual, and technically the statute of limitations had run out if it was rape. That’s all this kind of nonsense that people dig up and try to find out about you.

A Wall Street Journal article published in 2023 reported that McMahon had reached a multi-million dollar settlement with her a year earlier. His lawyer stated:

Mr McMahon denies, and has always denied, raping Ms Chatterton. And he only settled the case to avoid the cost of litigation.

Rita Chatterton, known in the ring as Rita Marie, was the first female referee for the then World Wrestling Federation (WWF). She made her television debut in 1985 at Madison Square Garden. Chatterton is a member of the International Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Women’s Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The six-part documentary series by former WWE CEO Vince McMahon was released on Netflix on September 25th.
