UNLV starting QB Matt Sluka announces intention to transfer for alleged NIL reasons

UNLV starting quarterback Matt Sluka will use his redshirt and will not play any more games for the school this season, he announced on social media Tuesday night.

“I have decided to use my redshirt year and will not play any more games this season,” Sluka’s statement on his official X account read. “I chose to attend UNLV based on certain assurances that were made to me, which were not kept after I enrolled. Despite discussions, it became clear that these assurances would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

While the “specific assurances” that UNLV failed to live up to are unclear, the impression is that Sluka is transferring for NIL reasons.

This would be the first time (at least publicly) that a player has decided to take a redshirt and transfer during the season because he failed to comply with NIL agreements.

Sluka joined UNLV as an offseason transfer after a standout career at Holy Cross at the FCS level. This season, he has completed 21 of his 48 pass attempts for 318 yards and six touchdowns with one interception.

The loss is significant for UNLV and head coach Barry Odom, as Sluka’s play earlier this season was instrumental in the program’s first 3-0 start in 40 years. While it’s still early, UNLV was considered one of the early Group of Five contenders for a College Football Playoff spot.

UNLV hosts Fresno State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
