Tropical Storm Helene’s track is shifting east. What does that mean for the weekend in KC?

According to the National Weather Service, clear, sunny skies will usher in a few pleasant fall days in the Kansas City area.

“With skies remaining clear, highs of between 25 and 25 degrees are expected across the region, making for quite a nice day,” the weather service said.

Normally, temperatures in Kansas City are around 24 degrees at this time of year.

Classic fall temperatures will continue to prevail across the region over the weekend and beyond.

Helene gains strength

Tropical Storm Helene continues to gain strength and is expected to become a major hurricane. On Wednesday morning, the National Hurricane Center reported that Helene was located just off the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and could reach hurricane strength.

Helene, which is expected to rapidly strengthen and increase in size over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, is expected to make landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida on Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Remnants of Helene were originally expected to affect weather in Kansas City over the weekend, but as Helene’s forecast path continues eastward, the chance of rain in the city has decreased, the weather service said.

The weather service said northwest Missouri, including the Kansas City metropolitan area, could remain dry through the weekend.

“Nevertheless, light, isolated showers are still possible on Friday,” the weather service said. “One or two isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out either.”

The areas with the best chance of rain over the weekend are currently east and south of a line that runs roughly from Clinton through Sedalia to Kirksville, Missouri.

Temperatures are expected to be between 25 and 25 degrees Celsius on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“Cold, polar air moving through the area could make for a rather cool start to next week,” the weather service said.
