Matthew Sluka, UNLV transfer QB, leaves the program after 3 games

UNLV starting quarterback Matthew Sluka announced on social media Tuesday night that he will not play any more games for the Rebels, opting to use his redshirt season.

The move allows the senior, who spent the first four seasons of his college career at Holy Cross, to re-enter the transfer portal.

“I chose UNLV based on certain commitments that were made to me, but were not kept after I enrolled,” Sluka said in a post on X. “Despite discussions, it became clear that those commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

Sluka was a record-setting dual-threat quarterback during his career at Holy Cross, ranking first in FCS passing efficiency, second in rushing touchdowns and fifth in passing touchdowns.

He led UNLV to victory in the first three games of the season, passing for 318 yards and six touchdowns and running for 253 yards and one touchdown.

The Rebels will use either Hajj-Malik Williams or Cameron Friel at quarterback when they play their Mountain West Conference opener against Fresno State on Saturday.
