AGT on her back.

Warning, spoilers for season 19 of AGT.

Who came second on AGT 2024?

Anything we can do, a dog can do better. That’s the lesson learned by Roni Sagi and Rhythm, the human-dog dance duo that took second place. America’s Got Talent Season 19. These best friends and dance partners came all the way from Israel to share their talents, and the cards were stacked against them.

Richard Goodall took first place.

A dancing dog took first place in AGT Season 18, and Roni and Rhythm have big shoes to fill and paw prints to fill. From the start, they’ve proven they’re up to the task. After their audition, Simon Cowell said that Rhythm is a better dancer than many of the human performers he’s seen on the show.

After their first performance (to “California Dreamin” by Sia), they continued to leave everyone open-mouthed as they danced to “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen in the quarter-finals and “Flashdance…What a Feeling” by Irene Cara in the semi-finals. With each performance, Roni and Rhythm showed us all that sometimes the best way to follow your dreams is not to walk or run, but to dance.

Not long ago, Sagi was working in an office job that she hated, so she quit and started looking for a happier life. This decision led her to Rhythm and eventually to AGT Final.

“When I met Rhythm, I suddenly felt like my life had meaning,” Sagi said.

“We have one last chance to dance together on this incredible stage. I feel like the luckiest person in the world because I can do what I love most with my best friend and share it with the whole world. I don’t know if you could ask for more,” said Sagi before she went to the AGT Stage the finale.

The show began quietly and calmly, the two bathed in spotlights from above, with Rhythm’s name written in diamonds across a starry sky in the background. As the music began, Rhythm spun perfect circles, weaving between Sagi’s legs and jumping over his dance partners. When he dances, he looks like the happiest dog in the world. He moves like a dog running happily across an open field, except that field is on the world stage.

A dancing dog could be a gimmick or a joke, but it isn’t. Rhythm dances like a human. Instead, he dances in a way that only a dog can. Rhythm and Sagi perform moves that require speed and agility that only a dog can achieve. In addition, they require absolute trust between both partners. Rhythm leaps into the air, believing that if they both hit their marks, Sagi will be there to catch him on the other side. The result is a number that has to be seen to be believed. Even that may not be enough. “Is that a real dog?” asked host Terry Crews as the performance ended.

What the jury had to say about the final performance by Roni Sagi and Rhythm

“I mean, come on. I swear, in my opinion, that was perfect. Really,” Cowell began. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, but I’ve never seen a routine as good as that one. We have a big problem. Now whenever we see a dog come on stage, we just say, ‘Yeah, they’re not that good.’ Seriously, how can you top that?”

Sofia Vergara’s love of rhythm extends even beyond the dance floor. She was so impressed by his dancing talent that she used her time to make him a pleading proposal.

“Roni, just give it to me, I’ll give you the million dollars,” Vergara said with his hands outstretched. “You can come too, just give it to me, I’m begging you.”

“This dog actually dances!” said Howie Mandel. “The big decision America has to make for that million dollars is, ‘Do I vote for people or for puppies?'”

In the end, America voted Richard Goodall as the winner of the award, but Rhythm and Roni came in a close second and of course a place in our hearts. The final of AGT Season 19 reminds us, to paraphrase an old saying, to sing like nobody’s listening and dance like we’re a dog.
