Flooding devastates OU campus in Norman during severe storms Sunday

NORMAN, Oklahoma (KFOR) – Heavy rains rocked the metro Sunday afternoon.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Police warn of severe flooding across Norman

Norman was one of the regions hardest hit by flooding during the rains.

Brooke Hieronymus is a student at the University of Oklahoma.

“I was coming back from lunch with my friend and it took us about 30 minutes to get to campus because all the roads were closed. We couldn’t get through. The water was so deep,” says Hieronymus.

Flash flood warnings were issued for many areas in Norman, Moore and parts of the metropolitan area on Sunday afternoon.

Norman police warned community members on social media: “Turn back, don’t drown.”

Hieronymus says, “It’s actually the first time it’s rained like this since I’ve been on campus.”

Chloe Grimes is another OU student who speaks to News 4 about her struggles navigating the campus near Elm Avenue and Lindsey Street.

“We came out of our dorm room, which is about 15 minutes away, and we thought the rain had let up. So we thought, ‘No, we can just hold on and keep walking. But it’s pouring down,'” Grimes says.

Trenches near Robinson and 48th were also filled with water.

Trucks and cars were seen in the area attempting to drive through the huge waves.

Students on campus told News 4 they are trying to stay dry and get where they need to go.

“It’s the first time this year that things have been bad here,” says Hieronymus.
