When should you change the clocks this fall?

Daylight saving time will end in autumn 2024. The time change will allow you to sleep an extra hour, but the days will be shorter and the nights longer. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

According to the US Naval Observatory’s Astronomical Applications Division, daylight saving time (DST) began on Sunday, March 10 of this year, when the clocks were moved forward one hour.

Michael Murphy, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Binghamton office, said the change to standard time will take place on Sunday, November 3, moving the time from 3 a.m. back to 2 a.m.

The National Weather Service does not use daylight saving time. Here’s why

Murphy further explained that while the warnings and information the NWS provides to the public are aligned with daylight saving time, the National Weather Service’s information is actually based on UTC time.

UTC time, or Coordinated Universal Time, is the worldwide time system according to the US Naval Observatory.

Murphy said the National Weather Service’s weather balloons and other products are based on UTC time, primarily to maintain uniformity across the United States and the world, but standard or daylight saving time is used when communicating that information to the public.
