Aaron Judge hits a home run, but the Yankees’ late comeback is not enough to end the 5-3 loss to the Orioles in the series opener

The Yankees will have to wait at least one more day to clinch the AL East title after losing 5-3 to the Baltimore Orioles in the Bronx on Tuesday night.

Here are some insights…

Aaron Richter continues to build his tremendous candidacy for American League MVP after putting the Yankees ahead with his 56th home run of the season. The big man finished the day 1-for-3, but has now posted 14 RBIs and a 1.229 OPS in his last 15 games and has reached base safely in all but one game in the final month of the season.

Gleyber Torres has done a great job leading the Yankees’ lineup, and he continued that in this game, singled in each of his first two at-bats. The red-hot second baseman missed a chance in the fourth inning, but a few innings later he came up with a man in scoring position and hit a ground-rule double to the opposite field to cut the lead.

Torres remains red-hot at the plate, but his overly aggressive base running on a Juan Soto A double set him up for a rundown at third base, potentially costing Judge an at-bat with the game-winning run in scoring position. He now has an ugly six outs at home this season, tied with Tampa Bay’s. Yandy Diaz for most in baseball.

After Dean Kremer After walking two batters in a row to open the inning, the outfielder hit a ground ball into a double play to end the potential rally. Verdugo did spark a small rally, ending an 0-for-10 streak in his last four games with an infield single two innings later, but it flied to left-center field for the tying run in the ninth inning.

Dominguez had an earlier chance when he came off the bench as a pinch hitter, but was ruled out by a groundout.

– Despite the defeat, Clarke Schmidt threw relatively well for the Yankees tonight. The right-hander allowed one run in the second inning, Heston Kjerstad Groundout and then two innings later on a Ryan O’Hearn single that brought in runs. He returned for the sixth, but was taken out of the game after Anthony SantanderThe 44th home run of the season gave Baltimore the third run of the game.

Tim Mayza And Michael B. both allowed home runs while working out of the bullpen.

MVP of the game: Colton Cowser

The Yankees seemed to gain momentum in the late innings, but Cowser’s brilliant solo home run increased the lead back to two and decided the game for good.
