TORONTO – — Trevor Story hit a game-winning three-run double in the 10th inning and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 on Tuesday night.
“The guys fought great until the end,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. ”We put everyone in. It was one of the most gratifying wins since I’ve been here.”
Vaughn Grissom reached base four times, scored once and scored a run, giving the Red Sox their fourth consecutive win.
Boston trailed 3-0 after six innings, scored two runs in the seventh inning and tied the game in the eighth inning.
“It’s just a testament to what we are as a group that we never give up the fight,” Grissom said. “That’s what you need. The best teams never give up the fight. That’s great.”
Story went 2 of 5 with two doubles. His two-bagger against Tommy Nance (0-3) with one out gave Boston its first lead and started a three-run 10th inning.
“He hit a slider in the zone and swung it great,” Cora said.
Pinch hitter Connor Wong scored a run with a grounder and Grissom added an RBI single.
Chris Martin (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Toronto has lost for the fifth time in a row. The Blue Jays have a record of 19-30 in one-point games.
Leo Jiménez cut the score to 6-4 in the bottom of the 10th inning with an RBI double against Zach Penrod, who was eliminated after a walk for Nathan Lukes.
Chase Shugart got Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to fly out, walked Spencer Horwitz to load the bases, then walked Alejandro Kirk to force in a run. Shugart then ended the game by getting Addison Barger to pop up. The save was the first of his career.
The Blue Jays have lost all five home games against Boston this season.
Guerrero opened the scoring with a two-run double against Brayan Bello in the third inning. He has 102 RBIs this season.
Lukes increased the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Ceddanne Rafaela started Boston’s comeback with a two-run single against Ryan Burr in the seventh inning. Rafaela has 61 RBI this season from the ninth spot in the order.
Boston tied the game in the eighth inning against Génesis Cabrera. Romy Gonzalez led off with a single, reached third on a hit by Triston Casas and scored on Masataka Yoshida’s grounder.
In his final start of the season, Toronto’s Bowden Francis pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out four times.
“Just another outstanding performance,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “You can’t say enough about how he finished the season.”
Francis is 4-2 with a 1.33 ERA in his last eight starts, going hitless twice until the ninth inning.
Squad changes
Blue Jays: Toronto reassigned RHP Zach Pop to its spring training facility and recalled LHP Easton Lucas from Triple-A Buffalo. … INF Orelvis Martinez was activated from the restricted list and reassigned to the spring training facility. To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Daulton Varsho was placed on the 60-day injured list. Varsho underwent shoulder surgery on Monday.
