Journey members defend Arnel Pineda after performance in Brazil

Members of Journey are defending singer Arnel Pineda following his viral performance at the Rock in Rio Music Festival in Brazil.

In an Instagram post, drummer Deen Castronovo said, “Arnel has taken on the challenge of Journey’s catalog, NIGHT after NIGHT, YEAR after grueling YEAR!”

“He gives ALL of you and Journey the best he can give you,” he added.

Deen stressed that the human voice, being a “biological instrument,” is influenced by several factors. “Sometimes it can’t, won’t, or won’t cooperate when it needs to. So what’s the point of forcing something on a person that they have no control over?” Deen argued.

“I know very few people who can do what Arnel does, without ego, with passion and grace,” he continued.

“Back off, trolls! You’re messing with my family now, and I’m a fanatical protector of my own,” he said.

Meanwhile, Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain expressed his support for the Filipino singer.

When he addressed Arnel on social media, he began with “16 years old and going strong!”

“I love you and I’m grateful for you,” Jonathan added, saying, “You’re not going anywhere.”

The two follow Arnel’s social media post in which he asked his fans to decide whether he should stay or leave the band for good.

Arnel shared a video link to his performance of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” addressed his performance in Brazil and apologized to fans.

“It’s really amazing how a thousand right things you’ve done are forgotten just because of that, and at Rock in Rio,” he wrote.

Arnel said he had “suffered emotionally and mentally.”

Arnel made his debut as the lead singer of Journey in 2007 after lead singer Jeff Soto left the band. Journey’s other hits include “Any Way You Want It,” “Faithfully,” and “Open Arms.”
