The White Sox escape the shame of being the MLB’s worst team of all time for another day

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox tied the 1962 New York Mets for the modern major league record of 120 losses in a season. On Tuesday night, they rallied three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2.

Andrew Benintendi hit a key two-out single to help the White Sox (37-120) avoid their shame for at least one more night.

Fans expressed their displeasure with White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf by chanting “Sell the team!” throughout the game and booing when Los Angeles’ Eric Wagaman grounded out to end the game, clearly unhappy that they were unable to witness a historic event.

Jonathan Cannon had three hits in six scoreless innings for Chicago.

The White Sox have five games left to set a record no team wants: two more against the Angels and three in Detroit.

Before this year, the White Sox had never lost more than 106 games, a mark they surpassed in time when they were beaten by the New York Mets on September 1st.

Chicago set the American League record with 119 losses on Saturday in San Diego and tied the 1962 Mets the following day.

But even though the White Sox were in danger of losing more games than any team since the Cleveland Spiders in 1899, they fought together.

Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning when Kevin Pillar led off with a walk and Wagaman hit a double to right center field against Gus Varland.

Jack López hit his first career home run in the eighth inning against Prelander Berroa (1-0) and increased the lead to 2-0.

Hunter Strickland (3-2) allowed two consecutive doubles by Zach DeLoach and pinch-hitter Bryan Ramos with one out in the eighth inning to reduce the lead to 2-1.

He walked Lenyn Sosa and put runners on first and second base before Brock Burke took Nicky Lopez out of the game with a fly to right.

The White Sox then tied the score when second baseman Jack López turned over and failed to catch Luis Robert Jr.’s high pass.

Robert was credited with an infield hit.

Benintendi then hit his decisive single to left.

Cannon delivered another great performance after his win against Los Angeles last week, with Justin Anderson making his first save in the ninth inning.

Jack Kochanowicz had three hits in seven innings for Los Angeles.
