Mets show little fighting spirit in loss to Braves, cutting NL wildcard lead

ATLANTA — This opening act, with a wild-card spot in the National League at stake, might have earned the Mets boos on the Broadway stage, but at Truist Park it was met with mostly glee.

Was it the Mets’ lack of energy or simply the home team’s dominant pitching?

Maybe it was a combination of both.

That boring game seemed to be over in the middle innings, as the Mets lineup was unable to even generate any excitement in a 5-1 loss to the Braves on Tuesday.

Atlanta moved to within one game of the Mets and now holds the final wild-card spot, while Arizona — which was half a length behind the Mets for second place at the start of the day — prepared to face San Francisco in a later game.

So much for the math still holds: The Mets can secure a spot with a win in this series.

However, with weather threatening to play a role over the next two days, no one can say if those games will take place before the Mets head to Milwaukee this weekend.

David Peterson is scheduled to face NL Cy Young Award favorite Chris Sale on Wednesday, but there is a high risk of rain, followed by the possibility of a tropical storm that could hit the region on Thursday.

That night, the Mets managed just four hits against Spencer Schwellenbach and the Braves bullpen and never seemed to be in the game after Atlanta made its breakthrough against Luis Severino.

Severino struggled through his shortest start of the season, lasting just four innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

It was the first time since August 28 in Arizona that Severino allowed more than three earned runs in a start.

Orlando Arcia’s squib single to start the third inning and Severino’s throwing error on that play started an inning in which the Braves took a 3-0 lead.

Michael Harris II’s RBI double brought in the first run before Ozzie Albies scored another single.

On this play, Starling Marte threw the ball home instead of reaching the cutoff point, allowing Albies to reach second base.

Severino got one out, but walked Marcell Ozuna and allowed a two-out RBI single to Ramon Laureano.

Harris hit a solo home run against Severino in the fourth inning, extending the Braves’ lead to 4-0.

The home run was the fourth that Severino allowed in his last three starts.

Marcell Ozuna hit a home run against Ryne Stanek in the fifth inning, putting the Mets in a 5-0 hole.

Ozuna’s home run was his 39th of the season and gave him 102 RBIs.

The Mets had their best early hit against Schwellenbach in the third inning.

Jose Iglesias extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a two-out single, and Brandon Nimmo reached first base on Arcia’s error before Marte was tagged out, ending the threat.

Mark Vientos hit a home run in the seventh inning, thwarting Schwellenbach’s attempt to keep a clean sheet.

Vientos’ shot to the right went just over the right outfield wall and reduced the deficit to 5-1.

The hit was only the Mets’ third in the game.
