Live music in San Antonio this week ranges from stadium singalongs to an unexpected mix of post-hardcore and synthpop, as well as classic rock, beach goth and music from a singer-songwriter with a serious family tradition.
Let’s dive deeper and clear everything up.
Tuesday, September 24
Hozier
Hozier creates anthemic indie soul in the style of the Kings of Leon. If that sounds like too many hyphens, that’s just how it is. The Irish singer-songwriter rose to fame with his extremely catchy, if inescapable, song “Take Me to Church.” Expect stadium-sized sing-alongs – at least for this one song. $39-$99, 7:30 p.m., Frost Bank Center, 1 Frost Bank Center Drive, (210) 444-5000, frostbankcenter.com. — Bill Baird

Wallflower, Early James
Almost three decades after the breakthrough album of 1996 Bring the horse down, The Wallflowers are coming to Gruene Hall. Jakob Dylan and his crew will perform hits from the album such as “One Headlight” and “6th Avenue Heartache,” the latter of which will set the mood at the famous Texas music venue. Despite an ever-changing lineup, the voice and the way Dylan – the son of a famous singer-songwriter named Bob – tells stories remains a constant for the Wallflowers and should make for a wonderful evening under the rafters, assuming you’ve queued up for tickets. Sold out, 8 p.m., Gruene Hall, 1281 Gruene Road, New Braunfels, (830) 606-1281, gruenehall.com. —Danny Cervantes
Brooks Nielsen
Brooks Nielsen, formerly of beach goth garage-psych band The Growlers, comes to South Africa to celebrate the band’s 10th anniversary. Chinese fountain LP. Celebrating the 10-year anniversary may seem premature, but the Growlers’ fan base is large and loyal. Nielsen recently released his first solo album, the double album One game left, which draws on influences as diverse as Harry Nilsson and Jonathan Richman. $35-$82, 8 p.m., Aztec Theater, 104 S. St. Mary’s St., theaztectheatre.com. — BB

Jim Messina
Classic rock fans should take note. As one half of Loggins and Messina – the other half was ’80s soundtrack king Kenny Loggins – Jim Messina recorded a series of acclaimed folk-pop albums, including radio hits like “Your Mama Don’t Dance” and “Danny’s Song.” Before that, he was in the final lineup of legendary ’60s folk-rock group The Buffalo Springfield. $59.50-$100, 7:30 p.m., Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, 100 Auditorium Circle, (210) 223-8624, tobincenter.org. — BB
Dayseeker, Alpha Wolf, Catch Your Breath, Kingdom of Giants
Orange County, California-based Dayseeker delivers an intoxicating combination of post-hardcore and synthpop. Check out the band’s 2019 “Sleeptalk” if you’re not sure how this mix is even possible. Singer Rory Rodriguez’s powerful vocals give the band moments of clarity and anger, helping them navigate the seemingly disparate range of musical movements. Dayseeker even released the acoustic album replica earlier this year and added another layer to his approach. $33.50-$35, 7 p.m., Vibes Underground, 1223 E. Houston St., (210) 255-3833, facebook.com/vibesunderground. — Direct current
