Johnny Cash statue to be unveiled at US Capitol and represent Arkansas | Johnny Cash

A bronze statue of country musician Johnny Cash was scheduled to be unveiled at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, one of two statues from the state of Arkansas.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries were expected to attend the unveiling, along with the state’s congressional delegation, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and members of the late Grammy winner’s family.

Cash was born in the small town of Kingsland outside Little Rock. He became one of the most successful artists of all time, selling 90 million records. During his lifetime, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He died in 2003 at the age of 71.

Arkansas lawmakers agreed in 2019 to replace statues of two little-known figures that represented the state in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statue Collection. Each state is allowed two notable figures in the collection.

Cash will stand next to a statue of civil rights activist Daisy Bates, a member of the Little Rock Nine who played a key role in integrating public schools that were previously racially segregated. Her statue was unveiled in May.

The two new statues replaced statues honoring Uriah Rose and James Paul Clarke. Rose was a co-founder of the American Bar Association and a Confederate sympathizer. Clarke was a state legislator in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The two statues of Rose and Clarke had been in the Capitol for over 100 years.

State lawmakers are trying to “reflect Arkansas in a more contemporary way that highlights some of the state’s more modern historical figures,” Rick Crawford, a Republican congressman from the state, told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette earlier this year.

Artist Kevin Kresse created the Cash statue, which shows the musician with a guitar slung over his back and one hand in the instrument’s strap across his chest.

When Cash’s daughter Rosanne Cash, also a singer-songwriter, saw a clay model of the statue in 2022, she said, “It’s uncanny how he gave this statue soul. It’s amazing and beautiful.”
