Johnny Cash memorial unveiled on Capitol Hill: “Embodies the American spirit”

Johnny Cash will now say “hello out there” to the countless tourists visiting the U.S. Capitol after congressional leaders gather to unveil a statue of the legendary musician.

Members of Cash’s family were joined by both Republican and Democratic politicians at the ceremony, which attracted hundreds more attendees on Tuesday.

The statue is the latest unveiling in the halls of Congress and the first by a professional musician, as Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson noted in his opening remarks.

“Johnny Cash is the perfect person to be honored in this way. He was a man who embodied the American spirit in a way that few could. He was a regular man. He loved fishing and suffered the pain of loss. He was the son of Southern farmers and the Great Depression,” Johnson said. “Americans have a connection to Johnny Cash.”

He acknowledged that some people might wonder why Cash is being honored in the same way as historical trailblazers, former presidents and dignitaries.

“The answer is simple. It’s because America is about more than laws and politics,” Johnson said. “Johnny Cash gave a voice to the struggles of the oppressed and marginalized that have all too often been forgotten.”

“When we forgot the assembly line worker, there was Johnny Cash singing about the guy who built the car piece by piece. When we forgot our troops, there was Johnny Cash, the man in black, remembering the 100,000 who died for that (flag). When we forgot the Native Americans, there was Johnny Cash reminding us of the petrified but justified tears of the Apaches.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., noted in his own remarks that music has long been a part of American culture.

“From the very beginning, in the DNA of this great country, artistic creativity was recognized as incredibly important to our growth, our culture and the American experiment,” Jeffries said. “Over the course of his life, he created a catalog of profoundly powerful works that cannot be classified into a single genre. At various times, he was country, blues, rock and roll and gospel.”

“Johnny Cash was a unique American at all times. He was a groundbreaking, transformative and trend-setting personality.”

Cash’s relatives also attended the ceremony – Admiral Carey Cash, a chaplain and great-nephew of the musician, said the opening prayer.

The statue depicts Cash with a guitar on his back and a Bible in his hand. His statue is one of three in the Capitol holding the Bible. Another belongs to Billy Graham.

The Arkansas state legislature voted in 2019 to replace statues of two lesser-known figures with Cash and civil rights activist Daisy Bates, the latter statue unveiled earlier this year.

The Cash statue was created by Little Rock artist Kevin Kresse.

It’s a nod to Cash’s own roots: He grew up on a cotton farm in Dyess, Arkansas, before becoming one of the most successful musicians in music history.
