Schools in Sarasota County will close ahead of possible hurricane

Sarasota County public schools will remain closed Wednesday through Friday ahead of possible Tropical Cyclone Nine, the district announced Tuesday morning.

The Manatee County School District has not made any announcement regarding school closings as of 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Sarasota schools will be closed after school ends today to prepare shelters designated as evacuation shelters to receive residents, the district wrote. The following shelters are listed as evacuation shelters on the Sarasota County website:

  • Atwater Elementary School (4701 Huntsville Ave.)
  • Booker High School (3201 N. Orange Ave.)
  • Brookside Middle School (3636 S. Shade Ave.)
  • Fruitville Elementary School (601 N. Honore Ave.)
  • Gulf Gate Elementary School (6500 S. Lockwood Ridge Road)
  • Heron Creek Middle School (6501 W. Price Blvd.)
  • North Port High School (6400 W. Price Blvd.)
  • Phillippi Shores Elementary School (4747 S. Tamiami Trail)
  • Riverview High School (1 Ram Way)
  • Southside Elementary School (1901 Webber St.)
  • Taylor Ranch Elementary School (2500 Taylor Ranch Trail)
  • Woodland Middle School (2700 Panacea Blvd.)

Sarasota County Schools will release more information as the storm progresses, the school district said.

The storm, which is expected to strengthen into Hurricane Helene by Wednesday, is expected to be a major hurricane when it makes landfall. Sarasota and Manatee counties are on the edge of the storm’s cone of uncertainty, according to the latest models of its path.
