Janja Garnbret reaches new heights with sport climbing

Sweat and tears during sport climbing

The route builder responsible for this lead wall was an Austrian Martin Hammerer, and he wanted to find out if the greatest climber of all time could make it to the top, something the seven previous finalists had failed to do.

In the end, she didn’t make it either, but it was all about that moment when she was getting closer and closer to the gold medal, not knowing if her score would be enough.

The cheering might have given her away, but she made it and went a little further before a slip at the 84.1 mark unsettled Garnbret until she quickly turned around on the rope and within seconds realized that she was now a two-time Olympic champion.

Then came the emotion, Pour out. Tears, joy, relief.

“I cried so much after bouldering because I was scared for my finger, but then after a few minutes I just stopped crying,” said an emotional Garnbret.

“I cried three times today. The first time because of pressure, the second time because I was afraid of my finger and the third time because of joy. I have no tears left.

And what a moment it was when silver medalist Raboutou – who had been denied the gold medal by her training partner – ran onto the stage to hug the champion.

“It was our wish to stand on the Olympic podium together. She has been through a lot and I am so happy for her that she made it,” revealed Garnbret.

Raboutou added, “Sharing this bond as both a friend and an idol is incredible. I admire her so much and am also so grateful for the support she has given me.”
