Trevor Lawrence: The quarterback has to play well for the team to win, I didn’t do that

The Jaguars signed Trevor Lawrence to a contract extension that puts him among the league’s best quarterbacks this offseason, but he hasn’t performed to his potential so far this season.

Lawrence and the Jags blew a 10-point lead against the Dolphins in their first game of the season and were steamrolled by the Browns before completely collapsing in a 47-10 loss to the Bills on Monday night. Lawrence threw an interception in the second quarter that marked the moment the game became a laughing stock and finished the night completing 21 of 38 passes for 178 yards.

Lawrence hasn’t completed 60 percent of his passes in any of his team’s first three games, and the Jags have now lost the last eight games he’s started in. That’s not the kind of performance anyone expected from the 2021 first-round pick.

“I have to play really well “We have to win,” Lawrence said, via the Associated Press. “That’s the NFL. The quarterback has to play well every week for us to have a chance to win. I feel like I haven’t done that consistently enough. So I’ve imposed that on myself.”

Lawrence’s subpar rookie season was blamed on Urban Meyer’s disastrous time as the team’s head coach, but that excuse no longer fits and the Jaguars need to figure out what the real problem is if they don’t want to regret building their future on Lawrence.
