Cam Taylor-Britt takes back his words about Jayden Daniels and Commanders after defeat: “We suffered a defeat today”
Cam Taylor-Britt doesn’t regret his comments about Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders offense that made headlines earlier this week.
But after Daniels’ near-perfect performance that led to a 38-33 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, Taylor-Britt didn’t hesitate to admit he was wrong.
“Yes, I can definitely take back my words,” he said. “We suffered a defeat today.”
Taylor-Britt was critical of the Commanders’ offense and Daniels in particular before the game, saying that the Commanders “don’t ask him to do much” and that they “keep it really simple for him.”
“They move guys around here and there, but keep it really simple for him,” Taylor-Britt said before the game. “I’ve heard his passing rate is very high, but he only throws short distances. A few intermediate throws, quick throws.”
In Taylor-Britt’s defense, Daniels had the second-lowest average air yards of any quarterback in the league prior to Monday night’s game.
On Monday night, however, Daniels was outstanding, completing 21 of 23 passes for 254 yards and throwing two touchdowns – including a stunning corner kick to Terry McLaurin in the fourth quarter that all but sealed the win at Paycor Stadium.
Daniels threw his other touchdown pass to an offensive lineman, the first of his career, and ran for another himself. His 91.3% completion rate was the highest for a rookie quarterback since the merger.
Additionally, there were no punts or turnovers all night, something the league hasn’t seen since 1940. The Commanders didn’t have to punt at all in their Week 2 win over the New York Giants.
Taylor-Britt did not regret his comments and said they were a bit over the top. But Bengals coach Zac Taylor did not like them in retrospect.
“That’s not what we do,” Taylor said of Taylor-Britt’s comments. “We praise our own team, praise the other team. We don’t have to make throws like that. This team hasn’t punted in two weeks. They’ve scored on every possession for the last two weeks. I have tremendous respect for what they’re doing over there.”
Taylor-Britt had four total tackles in the loss for the Bengals, who are now 0-3 for the first time since 2019. The Bengals will face the Carolina Panthers next weekend.
Knowing Taylor-Britt, who has a history of throwing material at his opponents all season long, he is unlikely to hold back after Daniel’s performance in the future.
