Vince McMahon criticizes Netflix documentary series “Mr. McMahon” as “misleading”

Former WWE CEO Vince McMahon says he has seen the upcoming Netflix docuseries about his life and is not happy with it.

In a statement posted to his social media accounts on Monday, the wrestling promoter said he recently showed an “early cut” and based on what he’s seen so far, “this documentary is unconvincing and takes the predictable path of conflating the character ‘Mr. McMahon’ with the real me, Vince. The title and commercials alone make that clear.”

The Netflix docuseries, which premieres Wednesday, follows McMahon’s career as he took over his father’s regional wrestling promotion and turned it into a global entertainment company. But it also sheds light on the dark side of the business, from the steroid abuse scandal that rocked the company in the 1990s to the sexual misconduct allegations that led to his resignation earlier this year.

“Much has been misrepresented or omitted entirely to intentionally confuse viewers. Producers use typical editing tricks with out-of-context footage and outdated soundbites, etc. to distort viewers’ perceptions and support a misleading narrative,” McMahon wrote on Monday. “To support their misleading portrayal, producers use a lawsuit stemming from an affair I ended as evidence that I am, in fact, ‘Mr. McMahon.'”

However, McMahon added in his statement: “I have no regrets about participating in this Netflix documentary. The producers had the opportunity to tell an objective story about my life and the incredible business I have built that was filled with excitement, drama, fun and a fair amount of controversy and life lessons in equal measure.”

“I hope the viewer remains open-minded and remembers that every story has two sides,” he added.
