3 Jacksonville Jaguars who belong on the bench or worse because of a depressing MNF performance

In the weak AFC South, the Jacksonville Jaguars were unable to pull away despite having the highest-paid quarterback in the division. Sure, it’s only been three games, but fans have the right to demand answers.

The Jags collapsed last season and missed the playoffs entirely. In response to their fans, they stuck with head coach Doug Pederson and signed Trevor Lawrence to one of the NFL’s biggest contracts. Lawrence hasn’t played well to start the season, but the Jags need to hold onto him for the foreseeable future. When a talented quarterback underperforms, it’s usually a sign of coaching.

Of course, there’s a chance Lawrence took a massive step back between the middle of the 2023 season and now, but he was once one of the most highly valued quarterback prospects for a reason. The Jags wouldn’t have renewed Lawrence’s contract if he was that bad, would they? Or?!

While Lawrence is still safe for now, there are several members of the Jaguars’ coaching staff and roster who aren’t so lucky. If their decline continues, the owners won’t be so kind this time.

While it’s not his fault, the Jaguars owe it to themselves to explore the transfer market for Mac Jones. Jones is a former first-round pick who started many games for the New England Patriots before it all fell apart. Jones was traded to Jacksonville this offseason, and the Jags could be looking to recoup at least some of the draft capital they lost in signing him.

Jones makes sense for many teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, who are in a quarterback purgatory of their own making. If the Jaguars’ decline continues, expect them to trade Jones close to the deadline and reposition for the 2025 season. Jacksonville once had a bright football future. This season has gone south, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’ve got the most important position in football under control. The rest is a whole other question.

Should Jacksonville be successful in the AFC South, having a capable signal caller behind Lawrence would be essential in case of an injury. Since their season has moved quickly like Jones’ career with the Patriots, it makes sense to part with a high-profile backup player.

The Jaguars’ offense has been lackluster the past few weeks, to say the least. While there are many to blame, Press Taylor is the obvious scapegoat if a change needs to be made during the season. Taylor has spent three seasons in Jacksonville, and the offense has demonstrably gotten worse since his arrival.

If you want to know how bad the Jags are playing right now, just ask Lawrence, who just last week proclaimed in a postgame press conference, “We’re bad right now.” I wonder how he’s feeling this week.

Taylor will be given time to clean up his mess, as he should. It’s only Week 3, after all, and the Bills are one of the best teams in the AFC for a reason. However, his leash is getting shorter with each game, and Monday’s effort won’t help matters.

Whatever Doug Pederson has been preaching to his team for the last nearly full season, he should try to do the opposite. Pederson won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles and made Carson Wentz and Nick Foles look like eternal Pro Bowlers. What happened, man?

Pederson is a capable offensive player at his best. We know that from experience, but there’s a chance the league has passed him over. His in-game adjustments aren’t working, and you know it’s bad when fans are demanding that Jones get playing time instead of Lawrence.

The main reason the Jags are considering a coaching change isn’t necessarily Pederson, but the candidates who would be interested should the job open up. Jacksonville has its quarterback and some weapons on board. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson springs to mind as an instant injection of youth and offensive diversity that Jacksonville could use.
