Doug Pederson moves into the firing line in Jacksonville

Twenty months ago, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson was just three wins away from becoming the first coach to win the Super Bowl with two different teams. Now he may be three games away from his tenure with the Jaguars.

God, maybe he only has one.

After an 8-3 start in 2023, the Jaguars have lost eight of nine games. They are currently 0-3, capped by a 47-10 loss to the Bills.

While that in and of itself is not enough to put pressure on Pederson, consider what owner Shad Khan said last month: “Now a win is expected. . . . Make no mistake, that is the best team the Jacksonville Jaguars have ever assembled. The best players, the best coaches. But most importantly, let’s prove it with a win now.”

After blowing a 17-7 lead in Week 1 in Miami, they’re not doing that anymore. They blew that game against the Dolphins, and then the Jaguars got overwhelmed by a Browns team that no longer looks like the playoff qualifier it was a year ago. Tonight was an ugly showing in Buffalo.

While it would be a huge shock not to see Pederson on the flight back to Jacksonville (for very different reasons than when Urban Meyer stayed home after a prime-time road loss), it feels like Pederson is running out of opportunities.

On Sunday, the Jaguars will travel to Houston after returning from Western New York. Next, the Jaguars will host the Colts. Then, they will make what has become an annual two-game trip to London to face the Bears and Patriots.

Although there is no off week after the Week 7 game at Wembley, a failure to turn things around in the near future could trigger a turnaround as early as next week and (more likely) after the annual England tour is completed.

They can still turn things around, given how quickly things took a turn for the worse last season. If they don’t, Khan’s words will become increasingly important.

Since purchasing the team in December 2011, Khan has fired four coaches, and he has never put the kind of pressure on any of them that was put on Pederson just before the start of the current season.
