Travis Kelce took acting lessons for months before “Grotesquerie”

Instead of resting after winning the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs, Travis Kelce decided to apply for other jobs – this time in Hollywood.

“Grotesquerie” co-creator and director Ryan Murphy said in a virtual press conference Monday that he had a general meeting with Kelce in which the NFL star “said he was interested in getting into acting.”

“We talked about his future and what he wants to do after football season, and I gave him some fatherly advice, so to speak,” Murphy said. “In my world and in my work, I always have the motto: A star is a star is a star. It doesn’t matter what field you’re a star in. When you have that charisma, you bring it to everything you do.”

Murphy said it was a “nice” meeting and concluded by telling Kelce, “I’ll think of you and maybe we can come up with something,” to which Kelce relented and said, “No, I want to do it now. I have three months now and I would really like to have it all.”

At the time, Murphy was just beginning pre-production on “Grotesquerie,” his latest miniseries for FX about a detective, played by Niecy Nash-Betts, who uncovers a series of heinous crimes that seem eerily personal to her. Murphy told Kelce, “I have this one role, and if you’re interested, I’ll write and tailor it specifically for you.”

When Kelce agreed, “it took off,” Murphy said. “The thing about Travis is that I directed the first episode he did with Niecy, and Niecy and I liked him immediately and took him by the hand and let him know that he wouldn’t fail, couldn’t fail. And he was really great.”

Murphy added that Kelce worked with an acting coach for “several months” prior to filming, which took place between football seasons.

“He came in without a script. He knew every line,” Murphy said. “He was so professional. He was so dedicated. He kept saying to me, ‘I’m really coachable, coach me, coach me.’ So I did that, and he ended up being a real joy. I would love to continue working with him on this and other things. I can’t say enough about him as a leader. He’s just the kindest, sweetest. … Everything you think about him is true.”

“Grotesquerie” premieres on FX on September 25. The series also stars Courtney B. Vance, Lesley Manville, Micaela Diamond, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Raven Goodwin.
