Demi Lovato didn’t realize that “explosive” moments during her time as a child actress and singer would have a negative impact on her mental health.
Lovato, co-director and contributor to new Hulu documentary Child starspoke about the challenges of early fame in a thoughtful part of the film. “I didn’t know it would have such a negative impact on my mental health,” said the 32-year-old (as reported by People ). “And unfortunately, sometimes that looks explosive, like an incident where you hit your backup dancer on an airplane or take a heroin overdose.”
In 2010, Lovato was touring with the Jonas Brothers when they physically attacked her former backup dancer Alex Welch on a plane. The incident prompted Lovato to enter rehab, which was documented in her 2012 documentary. Demi Lovato: Stay strongBut a bout of drug addiction ruined Lovato’s career, as in 2018 the two suffered an overdose after taking a near-fatal mixture of heroin and fentanyl. During her hospital stay, Lovato suffered three strokes and a heart attack.
During production Child starLovato expressed that the project was her attempt to apologize for her destructive past.
“Speaking to people who knew me at a different time in my life was challenging because I wanted to apologize for my behavior,” said the “Confident” singer. “I wasn’t the nicest person to work with at times because I was struggling so much inside and under a lot of pressure.”
Among those in Child star are Raven-Symoné and Alyson Stoner, who have seen Lovato at her worst in both acting projects.
