Former Viking is notorious for injuries – is injured

Former Minnesota Vikings outside linebacker Marcus Davenport, now a member of the Detroit Lions, may be out for the second consecutive year after suffering an elbow injury in Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

NFL Networks Ian Rapoport tweeted on Monday: “Detroit Lions pass rusher Marcus Davenport suffered what appears to be a serious and significant elbow injury in Sunday’s game, sources say. Davenport, who has been wearing a brace and attempting to return, could be out for the remainder of the season. He is currently undergoing further testing.”

Before his injury, Davenport recorded 2 tackles and 0.5 sacks in three games as a Lion, giving him a mediocre score of 53.4. Focus on professional football Note: If the worst happens for Davenport, the Lions’ next man up would be Josh Paschal, a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft who actually came to Detroit via a draft trade with the Vikings.

Davenport’s circumstances are well known – injuries are unfortunately his weakness. Davenport officially played four games last season, but in reality only played three because he tried to play against the Philadelphia Eagles but limped to the sideline after a drive. He was a key player in three games and then succumbed to a severe ankle sprain. No one heard from him after that. His 2023 contract – one year, $13 million – would have been worth more than the money if he had played, but for the most part he didn’t.

Vikings fans loudly criticized Davenport for his commitment to the team’s success after he failed to recover from his ankle sprain, although the theory was never proven.

Injuries
Minnesota Vikings outside linebacker Marcus Davenport spoke to the media from the TCO Performance Center. Davenport joined the Vikings in March 2023 after spending four seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

New Orleans selected Davenport in the 1st round of the 2018 NFL Draft and he has played in 69 games since then, starting 36 of them. In seven seasons, he has totaled 151 tackles, 68 QB hits, 27 tackles for loss, 22 sacks and 7 forced fumbles. The downsides to his resume are durability and consistency.

Here is Davenport’s story about the band of Focus on professional football since joining the NFL six years ago:

2018 = 71.8
2019 = 84.1
2020 = 73.3
2021 = 88.8
2022 = 76.8

2023 = 55.4
2024 = 53.1

Davenport is a skilled run stopper, has excellent pass rushing skills and was rated by PFF as this year’s best EDGE rusher on the 2023 free agent market when Minnesota struck.

The Vikings play the Lions in four weeks, a matchup that could decide who temporarily controls the NFC North. After three games, Minnesota is alone atop the division, although Detroit is only one game back.

Full confirmation on Davenport’s injury will be available later this week.
