Men accused of murdering Young Dolph stand trial

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (WMC) – The murder trial of well-known Memphis rapper Young Dolph begins September 23rd.

The suspects accused of killing rapper Hernandez Govan, Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith all face murder charges.

Johnson and Smith are accused of firing the shots that killed the famous rapper, while Govan is accused of planning and conspiring to commit the murder.

We know that both Johnson and Smith are currently in the Shelby County Jail, while Govan has been out on bail for a year.

Since being released on bail, Govan has gotten into trouble in Southaven, Mississippi.

He was arrested in Southaven and charged with driving without a license and carrying an improperly displayed license plate.

There was also an arrest warrant out for him in Desoto for “stalking/repeatedly following/harassing or threatening.”

Young Dolph was shot at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies.

Owners Pamela and Maurice Hil spoke to us before the trial about how their lives and business have been since the murder and how the community is supporting them.

They say it was tough, especially the days after Young Dolph died. They say things have gotten better now and that they too are waiting for justice for Dolph.

“Some people come here and start crying. It’s just beautiful to see his fans come and support the store that he loved to go to and try the cookies and they fall in love themselves,” Hill said.

On November 17, 2021, Young drove Dolph to his Airways location. Shortly thereafter, these masked gunmen entered the store and fired dozens of shots, killing Dolph.

They say things were different when he stopped coming to the store.

I’m just glad they caught these guys and I’m ready to see justice.

“We have our T-shirts ready to wear on Monday to fight for justice for Young Dolph. We are constantly praying for the family and just hope that justice is served,” the owners said.

To hear this case, jurors are being bused in from other counties.
