Drake London made the biggest play of his NFL career on Monday night when he caught the game-winning touchdown in the Atlanta Falcons’ win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. First, he put his hands on his helmet as if he couldn’t believe what had just happened. Then, as he was lifted up by a teammate, he held out his arms as if he were on the bow of the Titanic.

Then he celebrated again as he walked back to the bench and pretended to shoot a gun in the air right in front of the referee. That automatically resulted in a flag and the game-winning extra point was postponed.

London knew immediately what he had done wrong, and when Scott Van Pelt hit him on SportsCenter After the game, he simply kept quiet about what he had done. When Raheem Morris spoke to the media on Tuesday, the coach defended his young player and tried to dismiss the celebration as silly.

“At first I didn’t see it,” Morris said. “You know, I guess it was the use of a weapon, people interpreted that as punishment, as a penalty. Drake is a great kid. He had no intention of using a weapon. Honestly, he was probably throwing T-shirts into the stands because that’s just the kind of guy he is, but he was excited. He was excited. He’s one of those guys that plays with a lot of energy. He immediately apologized before I even had a chance to correct him.”

That’s incredibly creative, but nobody can believe it. But it’s good that Morris is trying to stand up for his player. No matter how far-fetched his explanation may be. And as long as nobody does it again.
