Dodgers Links: Mookie Betts, Padres Series, Anthony Banda

Amid a historic, if somewhat frustrating, week for the Dodgers, Mookie Betts capped the Dodgers’ series win over the Colorado Rockies on a high note by hitting a walk-off home run in the series finale.

Betts’ walk-off home run, which came after Shohei Ohtani’s 53rd home run of the season, was a huge sigh of relief for a team that holds a slim three-game division lead over the San Diego Padres, against whom the Dodgers host a three-game series starting Tuesday.

According to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, Betts talked about the significance of his game-winning home run and what it means for maintaining the lead over San Diego.

“That was great — especially when you look at the scoreboard and see that San Diego won,” Betts said. “I didn’t really want to look, but they won and we needed to win a game there. Shohei starts off with a home run to give us some energy, and luckily I was able to hit him well.”

Anthony Banda is a key member of the Dodger revolving door of relievers, but it was a major blow when he landed on the injured list after sustaining an injury after punching a paper towel dispenser in frustration, resulting in a hairline fracture in his throwing hand.

Banda commented on the situation and described his injury as a learning experience, writes Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

“I punched a paper towel dispenser with the outside of my fist out of frustration and apparently hit the weakest bone, which broke. I’m not saying that’s OK, but it’s not as bad as people thought if I hit something directly. I don’t do that to anything because it’s a risk. I look at it more as a freak accident, but yeah, it was a learning experience.

Fortunately for Banda, the injury does not mean the end of his regular season, as manager Dave Roberts expects his left-hander to return to the bullpen during the home series against San Diego.

Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black commented on the wonder that is Shohei Ohtani and pointed out that his personal success also correlates with that of the team, according to Juan Toribio of MLB.com.

“Well, he’s a superstar,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “He’s a great player. He’s hit over 50 home runs. That’s what he does, what the Dodgers do, right?”
