Patrick Mahomes had a simple reason for Travis Kelce’s problems after the win over the Falcons

Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs are 3-0 after Sunday night’s 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons, but the star tight end’s problems continued as he caught just four passes for 30 yards and failed to reach the end zone for the third straight game.

The 34-year-old caught just one pass for five yards in the Chiefs’ thrilling win over the Bengals in Week 2. He has caught just 69 yards this season and hasn’t yet become the weapon we’re used to seeing in the KC offense.

Patrick Mahomes was asked about Kelce’s problems after the game and the quarterback shed light on how the defense actually limits his tight end:

“It’s crazy because the respect teams have for Travis is unbelievable and it’s well-earned,” Mahomes said. “We call a lot of plays for Travis and it’s like two or three (defenders) go to him. That’s the great thing about him: He wants to impact the game, but at the end of the day, he wants to win. I’m going to do my best to get him the ball whenever he’s there, whenever he’s free. I think the more plays Rashee (Rice) makes, the more we can run the football, the more we can get (Xavier) Worthy involved. I think that will give Travis more room to play. People really make it a point to take him away, and that gives other guys room to play.”

Kelce will look to finally get back on track in Week 4 when the Chiefs travel to Los Angeles to face the Chargers, a team the tight end has had great success against throughout his career.
