Jerry Jones: Cowboys ‘couldn’t afford Derrick Henry contract in 2024 NFL free agency’ | News, scores, highlights, stats and rumors

One of the NFL’s best running backs was on the market as a free agent in the offseason, but the Dallas Cowboys were unable to sign him.

Derrick Henry left the Tennessee Titans for the Baltimore Ravens, where he handled the Cowboys’ defense on Sunday. After the loss, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked why he didn’t sign Henry as a free agent, and he gave a simple answer.

“We couldn’t afford Derrick Henry,” he said, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic.

He didn’t give a detailed explanation and said it just didn’t work.

“I don’t know. Why can’t you buy a mansion when you live in a different type of house?” Jones said, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “We couldn’t afford it. We can’t juggle everything. It’s as simple as that.”

Henry was interested in the Cowboys as a free agent and Dallas needed a running back after Tony Pollard was traded to the Titans, but Jones decided not to make an offer to the veteran.

Henry signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Ravens, while the Cowboys brought Ezekiel Elliot back to Dallas for a one-year, $3 million contract.

At that point, Dallas had not made any major free-agent signings, but later gave wide receiver CeeDee Lamb a four-year, $136 million contract extension before signing quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year, $240 million deal.

So far, those huge contracts have yielded just one win and two losses. And the Cowboys’ offense’s weakest point has been their running game, as they’ve managed just 221 rushing yards in three games. Elliot is the team’s best runner with 62 yards.

In Baltimore, Henry now has 281 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

“I wouldn’t blame the running game and the lack of it or our performance the last three games on any one running back, because it takes some offensive linemen to blow them out of there; it takes a passing game to keep them on their toes in the running game. It takes a lot of things to make that work,” Jones said. “It wouldn’t be solved by just going over and getting (Hall of Famer) Jimmy Brown.”

The Cowboys’ problems may resolve themselves as the season progresses, but at this point in the year, it’s hard to imagine Jones not regretting at least trying to sign Henry during the offseason.
