Nobody expected a Sequel to Gladiatornot to mention one that took almost 25 years to release, and yet here we are. Ridley Scott takes us back to the Roman arena for the next chapter of this epic historical adventure. As a cool continuity, this sequel will take place over 20 years after the events of the first film, almost concurrently with the two films. We meet the grandson of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Lucius, who is captured by a Roman general and forced into slavery. Knowing the legend of Maximus, he decides to become a gladiator.

The trailer for Gladiator 2 has shown off many new cast members for the film, but fans of the first installment will be looking out for any hints of returning characters. There are some we wouldn’t expect to return for obvious plot reasons, but there are many who could theoretically appear here. However, 24 years between films is a long time and some actors may not want to reprise their roles even if they are offered to them. Let’s enter the Colosseum and go through the entire cast list and see if any original characters appear in the sequel.

Get ready to meet a whole new group of Romans

The main cast of Gladiator 2 is relatively small, with only seven main characters. Here are all the new characters, who plays them, and the brief description we have of them:

• Lucius: Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, is the heir to the throne but knows nothing of his lineage. He is captured and follows in Maximus’ footsteps as a gladiator.
• Marcus: Pedro Pascal joins the cast as Roman general Marcus, who once served under Maximus.
• Macrinus: Denzel Washington plays a former slave who mentors gladiators, including Lucius, who have greater ambitions against Rome.
• Emperor Geta: Played by Joseph Quinn, he is the current co-emperor alongside his brother Caracalla.
• Emperor Caracalla: Brother of Geta, co-emperor, played by Fred Hechinger.

As for the original characters, only three that will appear in Gladiator 2:

• Lucille: Connie Nielsen will once again play Maximus’ former lover and help him defeat her brother Commodus. In Gladiator 2, she will be Lucius’ mother.
• Senator Gracchus: Derek Jacobi He has been confirmed to return to the role, but no plot details have been released about what we can expect
• Juba: Djimon Hounsou will pick up his sword again as another gladiator from the original. It is unknown whether he will actually be forced to fight.
