I-5 through Fife will be completely closed for the SR-167 completion project

FIFE 22.09.2024 – While the Washington State Department of Transportation works to complete the SR-167 Expressway bridgeDrivers traveling on I-5 near Fife are advised that the interstate will be closed in both directions.

The closures are being planned between SR-18 and 54th Avenue East Overnight stays on Fridays and Saturdays on these weekends: September 27-28, October 4-5, October 11-12 and October 18-19.

Detour signs will direct drivers around the closures when WSDOT begins closing lanes on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 7 p.m. All southbound lanes will be closed until 11 p.m. and northbound lanes will be closed until 10:30 p.m. The lanes are expected to reopen. Saturdays until 11 a.m., Sundays until 12 p.m.

The closures are due to the hiring of employees Supports for a new bridge that will carry the future SR-167 freeway over I-5 at the Fife Curve and the nearby 70th Avenue Bridge.

The SR-167 Completion Project is constructing six miles of new toll highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma and building sidewalks and shared-use paths for non-motorized travelers. According to WSDOT, the completion of this unfinished highway will significantly improve freight transportation, improve safety, and reduce congestion on local roads and highways in the area.

The SR-167 completion project in Pierce County is part of the Puget Sound Gateway program, which also includes the SR-509 completion project in King County. Together, these projects complete two major unfinished highways in the Puget Sound region and create new connections to Interstate 5, the Ports of Tacoma and Seattle, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
