How Purdy can keep up with Hall of Fame quarterback Warner in the NFL record books against the Rams

How Purdy can keep up with Hall of Fame quarterback Warner in the NFL record books against the Rams originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Brock Purdy has a chance to etch his name in the NFL record books alongside a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

If Purdy posts a passer rating of 100 or higher against Los Angeles, he will tie Kurt Warner for the second-most passes (16) through the first 25 regular season games in NFL history. The only player with more passes is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, with 18.

Sunday’s game against the Rams will be Purdy’s 24th start of the regular season, giving the young quarterback a chance to not only match Warner’s record this weekend, but also take sole possession of second place on the list with another such game against the New England Patriots in Week 4.

It will not be an easy task for Purdy, as the 24-year-old will have to do without key players from the 49ers’ offense when San Francisco faces Los Angeles on Sunday.

Star running back Christian McCaffrey remains out with Achilles tendinitis, wide receiver Deebo Samuel is dealing with a calf strain and tight end George Kittle has been officially ruled out for Sunday’s game after suffering a hamstring injury during practice on Wednesday.

Purdy has faced the Rams just once in his career, completing 17 of 25 passes for 206 yards and a rushing touchdown in the 49ers’ 30-23 win at SoFi Stadium last season.

Los Angeles was able to hold Purdy’s passer rating to 93.1 in the last game against San Francisco. However, it is important to remember that if Purdy had scored a touchdown in the air instead of on the ground in that game, he would have had a passer rating of 106.4.

The 49ers are desperate to rebound from a tough loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, and Purdy and some of San Francisco’s backup players can make a strong statement to the rest of the NFL on Sunday.
