Pablo Lopez of the Twins will start Game 1 against Nick Pivetta, while Zebby Matthews will start Game 2 against Kutter Crawford.

The Red Sox had to sweep the Twins in this weekend’s three-game series at Fenway Park to have any chance of a postseason berth.

Those hopes are effectively over after Friday’s 4-2 loss in 12 innings. The Red Sox are now five games behind the Twins for the final AL Wild Card spot with eight games remaining. The offense was again poor Friday, striking out 20 times (a franchise record) and going 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

With the postseason out of reach, the Red Sox (76-78) are trying to avoid a third consecutive losing season.
