Verstappen speaks about dwindling title lead after recent defeat against Norris

Max Verstappen has commented on his dwindling lead in the championship after Lando Norris drove to a comfortable victory at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Verstappen started the race in second place alongside Norris, but did not manage a better start than the Briton.

The Dutchman held his position until the first corner, but quickly fell well behind Norris. Verstappen was unbeatable with Norris’ pace and had to settle for second place.

Overall, Verstappen is happy with his podium and his lone race, considering that Red Bull did not expect a competitive performance before the weekend.

“Yeah, I think this is pretty much my race, driving all by myself,” said Verstappen. “I tried to do my best and keep my own pace until the end.”

“I think the first stint was a bit difficult for us, the tires were quite worn out. The second stint was a bit better. I also felt a bit more comfortable.”

“So, yes, on a weekend where we knew we were going to have a tough time, P2 is a good performance.

“Of course we are not satisfied with second place. Now we just have to try to keep improving and that is all we will try to do.”

Verstappen’s lead continues to shrink

Norris’ victory reduced Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship to 52 points, while McLaren is now 41 points ahead of Red Bull in the constructors’ championship.

The McLaren driver was on course to set the fastest lap as well, but this went to Daniel Ricciardo on the final lap.

Norris still has six races and three sprints left to make up the gap to the three-time world champion.

Verstappen’s lead has shrunk over the course of several races and he wants to break Norris’ lead in the championship battle.

“Yes, it is,” admitted Verstappen. “But that can change very quickly.”

“So we just have to keep trying. Of course, at some point we have to try to turn things around a little bit. We won’t always be behind, but we’ll see how that goes.”
