The Dutchman maintained his lead over Norris by 52 points (instead of 51 if the Briton had set the fastest lap), finishing second on the track behind his closest title rival.

“Your old buddy Daniel drove the fastest lap at the end,” said Verstappen’s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.

“Thank you, Daniel,” he replied.

Ricciardo was originally considered as the successor to the ailing Sergio Perez at Red Bull. But his poor performance at RB has put his future in Formula 1 in jeopardy.

While Lawson’s youth matches the ethos of the RB team, only time will tell if the emerging talent will be able to Yuki Tsunoda.
