Michigan State’s defense proves it is an impressive unit

Michigan State’s defense led the way against the Spartans on game day, as it has since the beginning of the season. Michigan State’s offense is still implementing a new scheme with several new players and dealing with numerous injuries to key players.

Through the four games, Michigan State’s defense was the more reliable of the two units, often giving Michigan State’s offense additional possession.

The Spartans traveled east to face a Boston College team that nearly beat a top-10 team the week before. Michigan State’s loss to Boston College put the team’s defense back in the spotlight, as the unit performed well except for the game-winning touchdown it allowed on a fumble.

Michigan State’s defense held Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos to just 140 yards in the air, making it difficult for the quarterback to make a difference. Against the sixth-ranked team in the country, Missouri, Castellanos threw for 249 yards. Michigan State’s defense continues to perform well when called upon.

As the Spartans prepare for the most difficult part of their schedule, they will undoubtedly demand even more production from the defense over the next few weeks. This will be especially true if the offense continues to struggle or if there is inclement weather on a game day. Michigan State’s defense is talented enough to mask the team’s minor weaknesses, and it would be a good sign for Michigan State to continue to look for ways to develop the talent on that side of the ball.

Although Michigan State lost to Boston College, the Spartans still have high hopes this season. It will be up to their defense to help the team reach its potential. Michigan State’s defense has the potential to single-handedly change the outcome of games, as it almost did against Boston College.

The Spartans, however, have no time to complain about the matchup against Boston College. They have a number of games to focus on in the following weeks, including Ohio State, Oregon, Iowa and Michigan. Coach Jonathan Smith has done a solid job with his team so far. He needs to make sure he prepares the defense and the team as best he can for a series of challenging games ahead.
