Detroit Lions at Arizona Cardinals: 3 burning questions before week 3

The Detroit Lions have the difficult task of defeating Kyler Murray and backing up rookie star Marvin Harrison Jr. in their first road game of the season in Week 3. This post addresses three burning questions ahead of the Lions’ matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Can the Lions keep Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray in check?

Kyler Murray was on top form last weekend. Seriously, check out some highlights from Arizona’s win over the Los Angeles Rams. Murray extended plays in the pocket, kept the ball rolling, and threw just four incomplete passes en route to a perfect passer rating.

The Lions struggled with Baker Mayfield’s weakness in some key spots last week, so being able to meet the challenge of a player like Murray is critical to success. Of particular note is the blossoming connection between Murray and Harrison, who both rushed four times for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Harrison seems to be adjusting well to life in the NFL, and combined with Murray’s ability to extend plays and run the ball down the field, the Lions know what they need to do to get back on track in Arizona.

“And the fact that they’ve integrated it with under center and the hard runs with boots off of it, really hard action, getting him completely out of the pocket, letting him see the field, and when it’s not there, you see what he can do with his feet,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said earlier this week. “So, I just think it’s good, man, it’s allowed them to really control the game. They can control the game if you let them, and I think it’s been good for him. It’s right up his alley. I mean, he’s got a perfect quarterback rating. So, I just think it’s a good fit for him. I think they’re still utilizing the things that he can cause problems with from the line of fire, the read run, the sone run stuff, but then they can just finish you off downhill if they want to.

“I don’t know how many missed sacks and tackles he avoided last week, I haven’t counted them yet, but that’s going to be a project for me tonight because it was unbelievable. I mean, it’s just been like that over and over again. So, he’s dangerous, man. He’s dangerous.”

Will Aidan Hutchinson benefit from another favorable duel?

Aidan Hutchinson leads the NFL in pretty much every pass-rushing category possible. He has 5.5 sacks, 17 pressures, and wins more than 40% of his pass-rushing reps. Hutchinson has benefited from favorable matchups so far and will get a chance to do so again in the West.

The Cardinals have Jonah Williams and Christian Jones on the injured list, so Hutchinson is looking at Kelvin Beachum at right tackle and Paris Johnson Jr. at left tackle. But it will likely be right tackle Beachum more often.

“It’s about being in the right place at the right time,” Hutchinson said. “A lot of it was just on the D-line, we all went at it as a unit. That always helps. And again, it’s really critical that everyone goes at it together to get someone getting sacks.”

“It’s the culmination of a lot of things, definitely physically, definitely mentally, just being in the league now and seeing what I’ve seen. Everything just slows down more once you’re in the game. Also my development as a player, I think all of those things, year after year as they develop, your level of play is only going to increase.”

Things can’t get any worse in the red zone, can they?

But seriously. Scoring just once on seven attempts inside the 20-yard line is unacceptable. The Lions know that and have worked hard this week to turn that brutal performance around. Some of those offenses were doomed by difficult early tackles that pushed them to the edge of the red zone, but the penalty at the end of the half on the field goal unit and the missed opportunities were deadly no matter how much you sugarcoat that issue.

“I think that’s uncharacteristic of us, really,” Lions quarterback Jared Goff said. “Like you said, we were able to move the ball. We got some yards. I’ve got to take better care of the ball in some of those situations and keep us on the field so we don’t put the ball in danger. But overall, we moved the ball pretty well, and I think building on that is the way we want to go this week.”

“They just played well on defense, we didn’t play well enough on offense and got into the game seven times. I think that was the most we’ve had since Ben started calling the plays. But ultimately we didn’t take advantage and they did a good job on defense.”
