The McLaren driver beat his World Championship rival Max Verstappen in Singapore and secured pole position after Carlos Sainz crashed in Q3.
But attention at the Marina Bay Circuit was stolen by Verstappen’s protest in the FIA press conference after qualifying. He gave limited answers before deciding to speak to the media outside, explaining that his move was in response to being sentenced to community service for being sworn in at the FIA press conference on Thursday.
Lewis Hamilton, who started the race in third place and attended the press conference with Verstappen, said he hoped the Red Bull driver would ignore the FIA penalty.
George Russell finished fourth, ensuring an all-Mercedes second row ahead of Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren and Nico Hülkenberg in the Haas.
Fernando Alonso qualified seventh for Aston Martin ahead of RB’s Yuki Tsunoda, while Ferrari endured a nightmarish Q3 as Charles Leclerc struggled to warm up his tyres and Sainz crashed, leaving the pair in ninth and tenth.
Sergio Perez was eliminated in Q2 for Red Bull and will start from 13th, while Daniel Ricciardo will start from 16th due to a Q1 exit as speculation about his future at RB continues to grow.
