The good, the bad and the changes to come – Liverpool 3-0 Bournemouth vs Liverpool FC

Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Bournemouth and received plenty of praise for their performance at Anfield.

The Reds got off to a slow start on Saturday afternoon, but it didn’t take long for their superiority to shine through.

Luis Diaz scored twice, continuing his remarkable form from the start of the season, while Darwin Nunez scored a superb goal, his first since early April.

Here, Henry Jackson (@HenryJackson87) and Matt Ladson (@mattladson) discuss Liverpool’s victory and give their predictions for Arne Slot’s team’s match against West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

The good…

HENRY: It’s safe to say that by 5pm I felt 100 times better than I did last Saturday, which is an instant positive!

Liverpool weren’t always perfect, but this was an ideal response to the horror show of a week ago and some aspects of the first half were outstanding.

The fact that Gravenberch now seems to be Vieira at his best is immensely exciting – he was exceptional and dominated the midfield.

Diaz’s game also proves me wrong. I wouldn’t have been disappointed if he had left in the summer, so I’m even more stupid! And his two goals reminded me so much of Sadio.

The crowd at Anfield also seemed to be more enthusiastic, even though it wasn’t exactly Barca in 2019.

Praise also goes to Kelleher, whose only save on the goal line was simply ridiculous. He is perhaps the second best goalkeeper in the world!

MAT: I think the whole midfield was excellent and everyone seems really balanced and understands their shared roles well now.

Actually, Mac Allister was my man of the match. This midfield system suits him much better than spending most of last season as number 6.

Kelleher’s save was outstanding. We would embed a video of it, but Sky Sports and co. haven’t bothered to upload it.

I’m not sure if it really improved the atmosphere, but a 3-0 win is always better than a 1-0 loss! The debate about the atmosphere was not helped by the fact that we had three rather unglamorous games at the start of the season – we really needed a big game early on under Slot to get everyone going.

Nice to see Chiesa getting more playing time before he is expected to start on Wednesday. I said before that I could see him playing quite a lot as a No.9. I’m not so sure if Slot sees this as just Salah’s replacement!

The bad…

HENRY: Liverpool’s slow starts are now officially driving me mad – how many years have they been doing this?!

They were just one offside away from going 1-0 down early on and had a tough fight ahead of them. We need to change that if we want to be real title contenders.

I think everyone played well, so I don’t want to single anyone out here.

However, I heard a snippet of Stephen Warnock’s commentary after the game and it was so bad we may have to forget he ever played for Liverpool!

MAT: Bournemouth’s tactics were poor! Playing a high line and putting Liverpool under pressure in their own half was a recipe for trouble.

This obviously helped us and avoided a Forest-like setup, but it’s a strange setup from their side.

After Slot said that he actually prefers to play against a team that sits deep (I’m not sure we believe you, Arne), all three goals were very much “Klopp-era” style goals: direct and fast.

Not necessarily bad, but another game with a full back four on the bench is odd. Poor Endo.

How many changes for West Ham?

HENRY: This seems like an ideal opportunity to make a change – frankly, if we are eliminated in the third round, then so be it.

The recent long runs in the Carabao Cup have arguably damaged our league hopes given the extra games.

Of course, I would prefer it if we progressed, and because of our squad depth we can still field a strong team.

It makes perfect sense to use Kelleher, Bradley, Quansah, Gomez and Tsimikas in the back line if Slot wants to use Gomez as a centre-back.

Jones needs to find a rhythm in midfield, Chiesa should make his debut and Gakpo should also play from the start.

I would also bet on Nunez again just to give him a chance to score again and continue his upswing.

MAT: Yeah, I’d be pretty worried if it wasn’t as many changes as possible, to be honest.

One of Slot’s biggest concerns is whether he understands the differences between a season at Liverpool, the Premier League (a more intense league) and three cup competitions. It would be naive not to rotate for that.

It’s a shame that Harvey Elliott isn’t available for this game. I would let Tyler Morton play to avoid having to start with someone from the regular midfield.

Kelleher, Bradley, Quansah, Gomez, Tsimikas, Endo, Morton, Jones, Chiesa, Jota, Gakpo.
