The word game was created by software developer Josh Wardle and released to the public in October 2021. The following year it was sold to The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Today, Wordle has a huge following around the world and is loved by celebrities like Ben Affleck, Meghan Markle, Bradley Cooper, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and others.

“We just write Wordle back and forth,” Carol Burnett Show said Star. “She’s the first one to have my coffee every morning.”

When it comes to their wordplay skills, Burnett says they’re on par. “We’re kind of similar,” she said.

Players have six chances to guess the five-letter word. As feedback, they receive colors that help narrow down the possible word.

A green box means the letter is correct and in the right place, and a yellow box means you guessed a letter in the word but it is not in the right place. A grey box means the letter does not appear in the word at all.

Speaking to Newsweek in January 2022, Wardle joked that although he developed the game, he wasn’t particularly good at it.

“I’m afraid I’m not really the best,” he said at the time. “(My partner) and I play it together on the couch every morning. She gets it in three attempts every time, which is much, much better than I could ever achieve. It usually takes me at least four or five attempts.”
