Western Kentucky 26-21 Toledo (September 21, 2024) Match Report

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Caden Veltkamp threw a touchdown, scored two runs in the fourth quarter and Devonte’ Mathews intercepted two passes in the final minute to lead Western Kentucky to a 26-21 victory over Toledo on Saturday night.

After a weather-related break of about 75 minutes, the Hilltoppers (3-1) trailed 21-10, but stormed back with a great special teams play that resulted in a safety and Veltkamp’s two drives in the fourth quarter.

Veltkamp scored on a 7-yard run with 10:43 left to cut Western Kentucky’s lead to 21-19 and then scored on a 3-yard strike with 5:16 left to take the lead.

Toledo drove to the Western Kentucky 13-yard line before Mathews picked off Tucker Gleason at the goal line with 54 seconds left. However, Velkamp lost the ball on the next snap and after a lengthy review, the call was overturned. The Rockets took over at the 19-yard line with 43 seconds left.

Two plays brought the Rockets to the 4 and two penalties pushed them back to the 19 before Mathews appeared in front of a receiver and intercepted the ball at the 1-yard line.

To secure the win, Veltkamp had to hold onto the ball and avoid the end zone for three snaps.

After the weather delay, Rex Robich made a great play to stop the ball at the Toldeo 2 after Western Kentucky punted. On the next play, Devon Lynch tackled Connor Walendzak in the end zone. The Hilltoppers scored on their next two possessions.

Veltkamp, filling in for TJ Finley, who was injured last week, completed 20 of 30 passes for 242 yards.

Gleason threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another touchdown for the Rockets (3-1).
