Sources – ECU’s Shavon Revel Jr., top draft prospect, tears anterior cruciate ligament

East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel Jr., one of the most promising cornerback prospects in the upcoming NFL Draft, tore his ACL during practice this week and will miss the rest of the season, sources told ESPN.

Revel has been one of the most productive cornerbacks in the country for the Pirates, recording 11 pass breakups and two defensive touchdowns since the start of 2023. That includes a 50-yard interception return against Appalachian State last week.

A source spoke of an “unusual injury” to his left knee, which he sustained during training on Wednesday.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has Revel ranked as the No. 2 cornerback prospect in the upcoming draft behind Michigan’s Will Johnson. ESPN’s Jordan Reid has him ranked as the No. 14 overall prospect.

Revel defied convention by staying at East Carolina this season, turning down lucrative offers to transfer to one of the top programs in college football.

“He has a chance to be the Quinyon Mitchell of this year,” said an NFL scout who has seen Revel this year, referring to the former Toledo cornerback who was selected in the first round of the 2024 draft. “He’s as talented a player as there is in a Group of 5 conference.”

Nearly every team in the NFL has visited East Carolina this year to see Revel, including regional scouts, national scouts and scouting directors, a testament to Revel’s talent.

Revel was considered a first-round pick. The NFL scout noted that he was surprised that Revel already had two interceptions this year, as he expected opposing quarterbacks not to throw in his direction.

Revel, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 190 pounds, was selected to the All-AAC second team last year, putting him on the radar of virtually every SEC and Big Ten team in the country.

“The size, the length and the movement ability, considering how tall and long he is,” the NFL scout said of Revel’s skills. “You rarely see a body type that is as lanky and lithe as he is at that size.”

Revel’s path to East Carolina included night shifts at an Amazon facility and time at Louisburg College, a junior college in North Carolina. He showed up to an ECU camp, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and soon received an offer from the Pirates.

After he shined last season, including a strong performance in his first start against Michigan, suitors quickly emerged for Revel’s conference power. He rewarded ECU’s faith in him, which turned out to be a mutually beneficial decision in early 2024.

Things were going well for Revel. He had improved significantly in the offseason and was one of the best players at his position in the country in 2024.

He recorded two interceptions and eight tackles, showing the fluidity and agility that attracted NFL scouts.
