Tufts University has launched an investigation after 12 members of the men Lacrosse team They were diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening muscle injury after training under the guidance of a graduate who had recently completed Navy SEAL training.
The university confirmed in a statement to The Associated Press that five students remained hospitalized with Rhabdomyolysis after completing a 45-minute workout on Monday.
“Our thoughts are with the players and their families and we hope that under the care of local medical experts they will make a speedy recovery,” media director Patrick Collins wrote in a statement on Friday.

“In the meantime, we are closely monitoring the condition of the rest of the team and have postponed all team training activities until each team member has been evaluated and medically cleared to return to participation.”
The athletes suffered a muscle injury that Cleveland Clinic describes it as “a life-threatening condition that can occur following an injury or excessive physical activity without rest.”

According to AP, the training was led by a university graduate who Navy SEAL training. The graduate was not identified.
Collins said The Boston Globe that seven players had been released from the hospital after treatment. He added that 50 students had attended the training and that head coach Casey D’Annolfo was not present during the session.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, rhabdomyolysis causes the breakdown of muscles in the body and can lead to muscle death. When this happens, toxins from the muscle fibers can leak into the bloodstream and even cause kidney damage.
In the United States, an average of 26,000 people develop this disease each year.
