All results: Janja Garnbret becomes double Olympic champion with gold in bouldering and lead

Garnbret had a narrow lead after the Bouldering event on Saturday morning, although even the 25-year-old was unable to climb the difficult final boulder and grimaced after the fall with an obvious finger injury.

They couldn’t have known, however, as climbers don’t know their rivals’ scores during the competition, making for a thrilling lead half of the final on Saturday afternoon.

And one after the other they came out of the isolation zone onto the stage and tried to climb the 15-meter-high wall.

Team GB Erin McNeice came into contention for the medal when she scored 68.1 in the lead with four climbers remaining for a total score of 127.6.

Then it was the reigning lead world champion’s turn Mori Ai from Japan, who struggled in the boulder with 39.0, but then pushed McNeice from the top with a remarkable 96.1 – and thus achieved a total of 135.1.

Raboutou then secured a medal when she overtook Mori with 72.0, leaving only Pilz and Garnbret to be eliminated.

Pilz also made it onto the podium and burst into tears when she learned that her lead was enough for silver or bronze and that only Garnbret remained.

Without knowing what she would need to win gold, Garnbret came ever closer to the medal she wanted to defend and surpassed that mark to great cheers.o Victory with 12.5 points total.

Emotions were high as training partners Garnbret and Raboutou hugged each other in tears after winning gold and silver.
