Marjorie Taylor Greene says Harris is ‘lying’ about death of Georgia abortion victim

Marjorie Taylor Greene said Kamala Harris “lied” when she spoke about the death of Amber Nicole Thurman in a speech in Georgia about abortion rights.

Thurman, 28, died in August 2022, two weeks after Georgia passed a strict abortion ban and criminalized the procedure, ProPublica reported Monday, Sept. 16. The young mother had gone to a hospital because of complications after taking an abortion pill.

ProPublica reported that despite the sepsis, doctors at the hospital failed to remove the remaining fetal tissue in her uterus using a procedure called dilation and curettage, and she eventually died on the operating table. According to ProPublica, an official state committee deemed her death “preventable.”

The vice president spoke about Thurman in her speech to a crowd in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, calling the harsh abortion restrictions “Trump abortion bans.”

Rep. Greene, a longtime Trump supporter who represents Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, said Harris “lied to the women of Georgia.”

She wrote on X: “(Harris) claims Amber Nicole Thurman died due to an abortion ban in Georgia. The TRUTH is Amber tragically died from taking abortion pills!

“And there is NO abortion ban like Trump’s. The Supreme Court has given states the right to make their own decisions.”

Greene continued, “Amber would still be alive today if she hadn’t taken abortion pills! Taking the abortion pills led to her tragic death.”

Newsweek Harris’ team emailed outside of normal business hours seeking comment. Greene was also asked for further comment.

In her speech, Harris said: “When Donald Trump was president, he personally selected three members of the Supreme Court of the United States … with the intention that they would uphold the protections of Roe v. Wade And they did so as he intended.

“And now there are abortion bans in more than 20 states from Trump – from extremists who have passed laws that criminalize health care providers, doctors and nurses and punish women.”

She urged the crowd to chant Amber Nicole Thurman’s name. “When (Thurman) discovered she was pregnant, she decided to have an abortion, but because of Trump’s abortion ban here in Georgia, she was forced to travel to another state to get the medical care she needed,” Harris said.

“But when she returned to Georgia, she needed additional care – so she went to a hospital. But look, under the Trump abortion ban, her doctors could have spent up to 10 years in prison if they gave Amber the care she needed.”

Harris added: “Understand what a law like this means – doctors have to wait until a patient is dying before taking action.”

The Trump campaign, which has always maintained that abortion policy should be determined by the states, said the hospital was to blame for its failure to provide life-saving measures.

“President Trump has always supported exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother provided by Georgia law,” Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s spokeswoman, said in a statement. “Given these exceptions, it is unclear why doctors did not act quickly to protect Amber Thurman’s life.”

Newsweek The hospital asked for a statement outside of normal business hours via a press contact form. ProPublica reported that the hospital did not respond to her request for comment.

Harris also questioned Trump’s stance on exemptions in her speech, saying, “So you’re saying that good policy, logical policy, moral policy, humane policy is to say that a health care provider won’t offer this treatment until you’re dying?”

She continued to tell Thurman’s story, saying she waited “20 agonizing hours” until “her physical distress was so great that her doctors felt they could treat her.”

“But it was too late, she died of sepsis,” Harris added.

Newsweek contacted Trump’s team via email outside of normal business hours to request a response to these comments.

Georgia’s state law banning most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy (the so-called LIFE Act) went into effect on July 20, 2022. Thurman’s pregnancy had just passed that mark when she discovered it, according to documents obtained by ProPublica.

The law also made performing dilation and curettage (D&C), a procedure to remove tissue from the uterus after an abortion or miscarriage, a crime with medical exceptions.

Medication abortion is the most common method of terminating a pregnancy in the United States. Deaths due to complications are extremely rare: As of 2022, 32 deaths have been reported to the FDA out of nearly 6 million women who terminated a pregnancy with mifepristone, regardless of whether or not the drug played a role.

Abortion remains a central issue in this year’s election. The Democrats present themselves as the party of reproductive freedom, while Trump maintains his stance that abortion should be left to the states.

While Trump denied claims that he would sign a federal abortion ban if he won the election, he declined to say during the Sept. 10 presidential debate whether he would use his veto to block a national ban if it landed on his desk.
