LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – After one of the driest September months to date (driest on Thursday the 8th), significant rainfall is expected through Sunday evening.
Showers and thunderstorms may begin late tonight. Starting around 10pm and most likely after midnight, a few thunderstorms could develop, some of which could be severe. Half-pint hailstones and 60mph gusts are the main concerns.
A similar danger exists for Saturday, but the overall threat is low and the main weather event continues to be precipitation amounts.
How much is the question everyone is asking. Earlier this week, it seemed like 3, 4, even 5 inches was on the table. Now it looks like 0.75 to 1.5 inches is the consensus. That’s still 7 to 15 times as much rain as we’ve gotten this month.
Meanwhile, a cold front will be a major factor in precipitation formation this weekend and will bring our temperatures down. Temperatures in the West are expected to be between 18 and 21 degrees, while temperatures around 28 degrees are possible in southeastern Nebraska. Expect increasing cloud cover and rain to play a big role in how much it warms up.
Temperatures of between 15 and 20 degrees are expected by Sunday, which will be quite a shock after what we have experienced over the past week.
Next week temperatures will slowly return to normal highs for this time of year, with rain chances again at the lower end.
