STUDY PERIOD: Detroit Tigers in top position in the MLB: How the AL wildcard works

Game Notes: After a short day of play with the Minnesota Twins for the third wild-card spot in the American League, the Tigers lost on Friday and the Twins beat the Red Sox in Boston after three grueling extra innings. That puts the Tigers one game behind the Twins with eight games left to play, but with the Twins ahead in the head-to-head, it’s actually two games.

The good news for the Tigers: They’ve beaten today’s Baltimore starter once before, just six days ago. Cade Povich pitched well in Detroit on Sunday — with eight strikeouts in five innings — but still allowed two runs on two hits and two walks. He lost when Matt Vierling and Colt Keith managed a walk, a steal and a single in a row after Povich left the game.

The two AL playoff contenders will finish their series at 1:35 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the Charm City. The O’s have announced their starter. The Tigers… well, they haven’t, thanks to, er, NOT tactics – thanks, AJ – but it could Casey Mize will be on the mound for the Tigers. (And then it’s Tarik Skubal, who will start for the Tigers at Comerica Park on Tuesday to open their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays…but that feels like a lifetime away.)
