More comparisons between Dylan Raiola and Patrick Mahomes during the Nebraska-Illinois clash

The similarities between Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola and Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes are now well documented.

Raiola, a five-star quarterback from Georgia, showed up at Cornhuskers training camp this summer with a similar haircut, beard, sunglasses and shoes to Mahomes. Raiola also wears a red No. 15 jersey, and his pregame rituals to pump up the crowd closely resemble the routine Chiefs fans have witnessed at Arrowhead Stadium over the years.

As the No. 22 Cornhuskers battled No. 24 Illinois, Raiola looked a lot like Mahomes on the field, with his best Mahomes impression coming on a side-arm throw in the first half.

Later, in the final minute of the first half, Raiola threw an off-balance pass to receiver Isaiah Neyor, who scored an 11-yard touchdown. A very Mahomesian pass.

At halftime, Raiola and the Cornhuskers led Illinois 17-10 in front of another sold-out crowd at Memorial Stadium. Raiola had 156 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception, and completed 16 of 23 aerial attempts.

“Man, it’s cool,” Mahomes said last week of Raiola imitating the three-time Super Bowl winner as best he could. “I was that guy. I grew up watching players – I loved Alex Rodriguez. When I played shortstop, I tried to play just like him. That helped me become the athlete that I am.”

“It just tells me that I’m getting a little old. That’s the most important thing. There are these guys coming up who are doing some stuff with the sidearm and stuff like that.”

There are far worse options to replicate on the field than Mahomes. So far, things are working out just fine for Raiola and Nebraska.
