911 call released in Carly Gregg trial

JACKSON, Mississippi (WLBT) – The first day of Carly Gregg’s trial began Monday with opening arguments and an emotional 911 call played for the jury.

The Rankin County teenager is accused of killing her mother, a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, and shooting her stepfather.

The prosecution began its opening statements by telling the jury that it was not here to judge the teenager’s so-called “secret life,” but Gregg’s actions on March 19.

At the time, the teenager was accused of killing 40-year-old Ashley Smylie and grazing Heath Smylie with a bullet.

“Now I want to take you to the real reason we’re here,” began Kathryn Newman, assistant district attorney for Rankin County, where the alleged crime took place. “A friend testified that he was so concerned that Carly was smoking marijuana, that she might be high, and that she had these disposable cell phones that (Carly’s) mother didn’t know about, that he felt compelled to tell Miss Ashley Smylie that very day.”

The state says when Ashley Smylie came home that March day, she searched her daughter’s room and found vape pens.

They claim that Carly did the unthinkable at that moment.

“We believe the testimony will show that she poked her head around the kitchen to make sure her mother had not come out of her bedroom,” Newman explained. “We believe the evidence will then show that she walked with the .357 Magnum on her back, went into her own bedroom and then fired three shots at her mother, killing her.”

Then it was the defense’s turn to present their case.

“This is not a whodun-it case,” began Bridget Todd, one of the attorneys representing Carly Gregg. “We know who acted on March 19 to cause the death of Ashley Smylie and the injuries of Heath Smylie. This is a Why Case.”

Todd claimed that Gregg, like others in her family, suffered from mental illness.

The state’s first witness was the dispatcher who answered Heath Smyles’ 911 call.

Dispatcher: “Where is your wife?”

Heath Smylie – “She’s lying dead on the floor in my stepdaughter’s room!”

Dispatcher: “She’s lying dead on the floor in your stepdaughter’s room?”

Heath Smylie – *Crying*

Dispatcher: “What is your wife’s name?”

Heath Smylie – “Ashley Smylie.”

Sitting next to the booth was Rankin County Deputy Hunter Lewis.

His bodycam footage was shown in court because he was the first to arrive at Smylie’s house that day. On the bodycam footage, Smylie could be heard describing Carly running away from the crime scene.

The last witness was a teenager who said he and Gregg were best friends.

He testified that he told the teenager’s mother about her drug use and her possession of a disposable cell phone.

Later that day, Greg called him on FaceTime and seemed upset. The friend claims he told Carly not to hurt herself or anyone else.

The teenager says Gregg told him: “Too late.”
